'Continuum'
An installation of Minimalistic sculptures with mirrors, exploring the ‘Eternal Recurrence’ theory of philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche and Giles Deleuze, portraying their theory that the universe and all existence and energy has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times across infinite time or space, viewing reality as a continual state of becoming.
According to Deleuze, “The Present is the repeater, the past is repletion itself, but the future is that which is repeated”.
In addition to depicting the acts of repetition as time, intertwining past with present and the future, relating to the philosophy of Predeterminism in that people are predestined to continue the same events over and over again, my schematic ‘line drawing’ sculptures representing various stages of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence denote Nietzsche’s formula of ‘Amor Fati’ (’Love of one’s fate’).
“Yes, life is a heavy burden! One has to learn to love oneself-thus I teach – with a hale and healthy love, so one can stand oneself and not have to roam around. But courage is the best slayer, it slays even death for it says: “Was that life? Well then! One more time!”.
In context with both my practical and theoretical methodologies, the peripheral element within each artwork is to articulate and communicate aspects of biomedical science, with the aim to make visual medical conditions and the impact sufferers experience, with the underpinning idea to raise awareness.
