D I _ T _ _ Y     D _ S E A _ _ S

This autobiographical work denotes an in depth exploration of the preventable diseases caused by bad diet and obesity.

Stemming from my own ongoing personal distress concerning my mum’s serious long term health complications all as a result of a lifetime of bad diet.  I describe her life now as ‘Life without life’, in my opinion, worse than death itself.

My aspiration was to create a unique abstract anatomical sculptural installation that communicates these sentiments.

Definition of Anatomical (McMillan, 2017)  ‘a structure that represents an organism or any of its parts’.

The sculptures are a representation of the ugliness and enormity of the subject, designed to evoke a reaction from the viewer, with hope that it prompts them to spend time decoding the narrative and compels them to question their own lifestyle choices and thus encourage social awareness.

My mother’s armchair creates a participatory element to my work, allowing the viewer to enter the space, immersing them into my world, becoming part of the work itself.

Sitting below the suspended oversized diseased organs and having interactivity with the work will induce vulnerability, amplify the message and stimulate visual perception.

The sculptures are abstract and grotesque style through my use of narrative relevant materials, (lard, salt and sugar) and vastly oversized.

Suspended so they can gently move with air flow, portraying the fragility of the human organs and life. A paradox as could be perceived as almost beautiful, plant-like, a contradiction, a puzzle.
